Training in pediatrics at the University of Colorado is an invigorating and comprehensive experience designed to equip residents with the necessary skills to practice medicine effectively. Curriculum

The curriculum is designed to provide an individualized learning experience. This personalized approach aligns with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requirements, covering six months of career-focused training to prepare residents for their post-residency careers.1

Rotations

The residency program operates across three primary training sites: Children’s Hospital Colorado, Denver Health, and the University of Colorado Hospital. Each site offers distinct learning opportunities:

• Children’s Hospital Colorado: As the pediatric referral center for the Rocky Mountain region, it provides a comprehensive pediatric experience, handling both common and rare conditions.
• Denver Health: This institution serves primarily underserved populations in the area and provides critical hands-on experience, allowing residents to participate in community health initiatives.
• University of Colorado Hospital: Residents are involved in neonatal care and high-risk deliveries, providing exposure to medically complicated cases.

Residents rotate through multiple disciplines, including inpatient pediatrics, emergency medicine, neonatology, and outpatient clinics, ensuring well-rounded training across the spectrum of pediatric health care.2

Research Opportunities

Research is a vital component of residency training. Residents are encouraged to engage in scholarly activities, with opportunities to partake in clinical or laboratory-based research projects. The program houses various research pathways, including:

• Accelerated Research Pathway: A flexible yet rigorous two-year research program, tailored for candidates aiming to become clinician-investigators.
• Pediatric Physician Scientist Training Program (PPSTP): Designed for residents committed to an academic career, the program offers mentorship, education, and community support in pediatric research.3

Diversity and Inclusion

Visa Support

The program supports international medical graduates and sponsors J-1 visas. There may be consideration for H-1B visas in certain circumstances, provided that applicants pass the USMLE Step 3 before the rank order list (ROL) deadline. It is recommended that international applicants have four months of clinical experience at accredited U.S. institutions and attain ECFMG certification.7

Application Competitiveness and Requirements

As a highly competitive pediatric residency program, the University of Colorado receives more than 1,500 applications annually. Applicants are required to submit a completed ERAS application, including a CV, letters of recommendation, a medical school transcript, and USMLE scores. The program does not accept late applications, and specific scores and previous experiences are strongly considered during the selection process.8
