Surgical Pathology Fellowship

The Surgical Pathology service of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston offers a one-year program of non-ACGME accredited subspecialty training in surgical pathology.

The surgical pathology fellow must be board eligible. During this time, fellows will function as a junior attending. They will be given primary responsibility for examination and diagnosis of surgical pathology specimens. The Medical University of South Carolina Surgical Pathology Laboratory examines approximately 30,000 surgical pathology accessions (52,000 specimens), including bone and soft tissue, GI, gynecologic oncology specimens, neuropathology, and dermatopathology specimens. Many cases involve immunocytochemical, molecular, flow cytometric, and ultrastructural examination.

The surgical pathology fellowship responsibilities include teaching residents, medical students, and participation in interdepartmental conferences and tumor boards. There will also be exposure to use of telepathology for the purposes of frozen section and surgical pathology sign-out. Depending on interest and previous experience, the fellow may participate in ongoing research projects within the Section of Surgical Pathology. Many of these projects would expose the fellow to newer diagnostic/research methodologies such as molecular/cytogenetic analysis, image analysis, immunohistochemical and in situ hybridization, tissue culture and flow cytometry.
