Lung Transplant Fellowship
The UC San Diego Lung Transplant Fellowship is a one-year non-ACGME program dedicated to the training of outstanding lung transplant physicians. The UC San Diego Lung Transplant Program, led by Drs. Kamyar Afshar (Medical Director) and Eugene Golts (Surgical Director), is one of the highest quality programs in the nation based on Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR) ratings. Furthermore, UC San Diego was ranked number 10 by US News & World Report for “Pulmonary and Lung Surgery” for 2022-2023.
Our program delivers high-quality, patient-centric care with an innovative approach that is efficient and equitable to all suitable candidates. Our fellowship provides trainees with exposures to a wide array of disease states and complex management plans. Trainees are integrated into a dedicated and compassionate group of professionals who provide comprehensive multidisciplinary care.
Prerequisites:
To be considered for a fellowship position, the applicant is expected to:
- Have DO, MD, or equivalent degree
- Be ABIM board-certified/board-eligible in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Disease, and Critical Care Medicine with at least three years of ACGME training
- Be eligible to practice medicine in California
- Complete the application as below with 3 letters of recommendation

- Curriculum vitae
- Minimum of 3 letters of recommendation from their training program director and colleagues who can attest to their qualifications
