Fellowship in Blood Banking / Transfusion Medicine
The one-year ACGME approved training program in Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine Fellowship is a joint program supported by Thomas Jefferson University Hospital (TJUH) and the American Red Cross (ARC) Blood Services, Penn-Jersey Region. TJUH is a 957-bed acute care facility with a full range of clinical specialties and subspecialties.
The Transfusion Medicine Department at TJUH is comprised of the Blood Bank Laboratory, Therapeutic Apheresis service, and Blood Donor Center. The Transfusion Medicine service provides extensive opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration within a range of clinical specialties. Pathology residents rotate through the blood bank as part of their core training, and operational responsibilities are carried out by the transfusion medicine fellow and residents under continuous attending supervision.
The prospective fellow will gain comprehensive experience in the blood bank, including compatibility testing, component processing, complex antibody identification, and resolution of challenging serologic cases. The fellowship also includes advanced immunohematology training through collaboration with the ARC reference laboratory. In addition, the program features a Patient Blood Management program, providing the fellow with essential training in evidenced-based strategies to optimize best practices in transfusion. A rotation at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia or Nemours Children’s Hospital provides a unique opportunity for the fellow to gain exposure in pediatric transfusion practices and apheresis in the management of pediatric apheresis patients.
