Foregut Fellowship

The Division of Thoracic Surgery at Swedish Medical Center announces an unexpected availability for a one-year Foregut Fellowship, commencing in August 2025.

The division is a high volume foregut center of excellence and addresses all pathology from the upper esophageal sphincter to the pylorus, both benign and malignant. We approach these issues open, laparoscopic, thoracoscopic, and endoscopic depending on the pathology and the patient. We seek to train experts in foregut surgery. We do not do primary bariatric surgery though we frequently are involved in addressing complications of bariatric surgery. We frequently perform redo operations.

We have five surgical faculty and perform greater than 450 benign foregut cases per year, approximately 15 gastrectomies and 35 esophagectomies per year. We perform our own endoscopies, as well as the diagnostic work up for esophageal pathology ourselves. We perform POEM and myotomy for zenkers and the pylorus.

We have four nurse practitioners and two general surgery residents through the Swedish Medical Center program. We have an active research program and applicants are expected to complete at least one research project and present at a national meeting.

Given the late nature of the spot becoming available, we will have to move quickly to find a new applicant and get a Washington state license in anticipation of an August 1 start date. You will have to be in Seattle approximately one week prior to start date for onboarding.
