General Surgery Residency-Preliminary Position
The University of Alabama at Birmingham’s General Surgery Residency Program has an opening for a Preliminary PGY-2 resident beginning June 24, 2025 and ending June 23, 2026.
The mission of the UAB General Surgery Residency Program is to train diverse residents to pursue individualized paths towards the common goal of clinical excellence and leadership in surgery in order to provide compassionate, high quality care and improve the practice of medicine.
UAB’s General Surgery Residency Program provides residents with clinical experience at a high-volume, level-one quaternary care hospital. Resident training is enhanced with a variety of unique opportunities to develop as a surgeon and an academic physician, including weekly education conferences, simulation experiences, extensive robotic surgery training, and more. We are passionate about training the next generation of academic surgeons.
UAB Hospital is the third-largest public hospital in the U.S. with 1,157 licensed beds. More than 50,000 operative procedures are performed annually at UAB, providing trainees with abundant opportunities. On average, our residents perform over 1,300 procedures during their residency. As the state’s only Level 1 ACS Verified Trauma Center, UAB provides training opportunities in a wide variety of complex cases.
Prerequisites:
To be eligible for the Preliminary PGY-2 position applicants must be a current PGY-1 resident in an ACGME-accredited program and be in good standing in their current program.

- Rotations completed as a PGY-1
- ACGME Case log
- ABSITE transcripts
- USMLE/COMLEX transcript
- Medical School transcript and diploma
- MSPE
- 3 letters of recommendation (one must be from current program director)
