Global Surgery Fellowship

The Creighton University Department of Surgery created a Global Surgery Fellowship (GSF) in 2017. “In Creighton’s Jesuit, Catholic tradition, to improve the human condition and transform learners into exceptional physicians who are leaders in advancing medicine, health and well-being”, and following the Catholic Social Teaching of “the preferential option for the poor”. The fellowship is meant to help meet the critical surgical health care needs of low-income countries and rural communities in our country.

The fellowship is one year with the first 6 months spent in Omaha, Nebraska and the last 6 months internationally at a district hospital in a low-income country. Currently we are partnering with University of Global Health Equity in Rwanda. A quality improvement project at the international site is also required to be completed by the fellow, directed by our international partners.

The fellowship provides significant obstetrical, orthopedic, urologic and ENT surgical experience as the operating surgeon in Omaha. In addition, adult and pediatric anesthesia, ultrasound, and burn rotations are available. There is a week-long cadaver lab with neurosurgery, plastics and other procedures. The Omaha rotations are altered in length and inclusion based on the fellows’ prior subspecialty exposure and career pathway.

The fellow is paid a PGY 6 salary and benefits including travel expenses to and from the low-income country. In addition, the required quality improvement project at the international site has a $5000 budget.
