BayCare Health System/Morton Plant North Bay Hospital-Recovery Center Program

The BayCare Psychiatry Residency Program is a comprehensive 4-year General Psychiatry program based at the Morton Plant North Bay Recovery Center situated in Pasco County, Florida. This program offers six resident positions annually and is affiliated with BayCare, a prominent not-for-profit health system serving the Tampa Bay area, which comprises 15 hospitals and multiple outpatient clinics. The program is designed to produce well-rounded community psychiatrists who exhibit excellence in clinical practice, are proficient in psychopharmacology and psychotherapy, and possess the requisite knowledge, skills, and behaviors necessary for independent practice. Applicant Criteria

To apply for the BayCare Psychiatry Residency Program, prospective candidates must submit their applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and participate in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Essential components of the application include a curriculum vitae, a personal statement, medical school transcripts, the Medical School Performance Evaluation (MSPE) or Dean’s letter, and official USMLE or COMLEX transcripts. Candidates are also required to submit three letters of recommendation. It is important to note that initially, the program does not accept applications that necessitate J1 or H1B visa sponsorship.2

Curriculum Overview

The curriculum in the BayCare Psychiatry Residency Program is structured around 13 four-week block rotations across four years of training. Beginning in their second year, all residents are involved in a combined continuity and psychotherapy clinic within the BayCare Health System, dedicating a half-day each week to this integral experience. The program’s elective opportunities are highly flexible, allowing residents to explore diverse interests, such as Addiction Psychiatry, Child Psychiatry, Forensic Psychiatry, Geriatric Psychiatry, Leadership in Psychiatry, Administration, Neurology, and Research.3

The didactic component for PGY-1 residents includes structured learning every Thursday afternoon, providing dedicated time for lectures, case discussions, and interactive learning. The sessions are held at the North Bay Recovery Center and are designed to promote resident engagement through discussions and presentations. Meals are provided by BayCare during these sessions, ensuring that residents can focus on their education.4
