Garden City Hospital Program

The Internal Medicine Program at Garden City Hospital is a comprehensive three-year residency that offers a wide-ranging clinical experience in both general and subspecialty Internal Medicine within a community hospital environment. Residents have the flexibility to customize their training to prepare for either primary care or subspecialty residency paths, with additional external electives also available for further enrichment.

The program integrates a tiered call system for ICU/IM responsibilities, thereby ensuring residents can balance their educational obligations with patient care effectively. For educational development, the program supplies individualized access to essential resources like MKSAP and Uworld, along with DynaMed for instant clinical references via the Epic platform. There is also a selection of two additional study guides curated by the residents for group usage, enhancing collaborative learning.

Garden City Hospital provides fellowship training in several subspecialties, including a three-year fellowship in Cardiology. This enables interested residents an opportunity to further specialize following the completion of the Internal Medicine residency.

PGY-2 (52 Weeks Total)

• 17 Weeks of Internal Medicine Floor
• 12 Weeks of Electives
• 4 Weeks of ICU Nights
• 4 Weeks of Ambulatory Clinic
• 4 Weeks of Endocrinology
• 4 Weeks of Pulmonology
• 4 Weeks of Rheumatology
• 3 Weeks of Floor Nights

• 10 Weeks of Internal Medicine Floor
• 12 Weeks of Electives/Research
• 4 Weeks of Hospitalist
• 4 Weeks of ICU
• 4 Weeks of Gastroenterology

• 4 Weeks of Ambulatory Clinic
• 4 Weeks of Addiction Medicine/Palliative Medicine (2 Weeks Each)

Residents benefit from an organized academic schedule that features various educational components:

• Daily morning report
• Weekly noon lecture with participation from attending physicians and residents
• 2-hour didactic sessions
• Grand Rounds conducted by Wayne State University every Tuesday
• Monthly Morbidity & Mortality (M&M) conferences
• Journal Club and a lecture series from Michigan State University

Structured time for didactics includes Wednesday Morning Reports, Board Preparation sessions, and Grand Rounds, allowing residents to stay current with medical knowledge. The program hosts a rigorous series of academic activities to foster learning, including M&M sessions and Tumor Boards.

Opportunities to engage in research are abundant, with residents encouraged to participate in ongoing clinical studies, presenting their findings at various conferences.

The program provides sponsorship for the J1 Visa, allowing international medical graduates to partake in the training offered by the Garden City Hospital Internal Medicine Residency Program.

The Garden City Hospital Internal Medicine Program is known for being highly competitive, with a limited number of spots available each year. The program is welcoming to DO candidates and International Medical Graduates (IMGs) and strives to foster a diverse educational environment.

Application criteria may include a maximum of one failed Step examination and previous graduation years not extending beyond a certain timeframe. These stipulations ensure a strong applicant pool committed to the demands of the residency.
