HealthPartners Institute/Regions Hospital Program

Specialty: Preventive Medicine
ACGME Code: 3822677079

The Occupational and Environmental Medicine (OEM) Residency program provides an exceptional opportunity for residents to engage in a curriculum that harmonizes individual patient care with broader population health management concepts. The training emphasizes the prevention and management of occupational and environmental illnesses and injuries, with a focus on enhancing the well-being of workers, their families, and the communities they serve. This program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and is sponsored by HealthPartners Institute, offering a collaborative and comprehensive educational experience.

The program is anchored at the HealthPartners West Clinic located in Saint Louis Park, Minnesota, which forms a part of the Minnesota Center for Occupational Health and Safety (MCOHS). The MCOHS serves as an Educational and Research Center (ERC) funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), providing a robust framework for education and research in occupational health.

Since its establishment in 1977, the program has maintained a strong affiliation with both the St. Paul Ramsey Medical Center (currently HealthPartners – Regions Hospital) and the University of Minnesota School of Public Health. This longstanding tradition underscores the program’s commitment to excellence and its integration within the larger academic framework necessary for training leaders in the field of occupational medicine.

Curriculum and Training Experience

The OEM residency curriculum emphasizes both clinical and preventive medicine. Residents will gain valuable experience through rotations that encompass various disciplines relevant to occupational health. This includes exposure to clinical practice as well as public health principles, facilitating a comprehensive understanding that is vital for effective practice in this specialty.

Residency Training Sites

The primary residency training site is the HealthPartners West Clinic in Saint Louis Park, MN. This clinic serves as a vital learning environment where residents can apply theoretical knowledge in real-world clinical settings. Other affiliated sites may include various hospitals and clinics across the HealthPartners network, providing a diverse patient population and a wide range of medical cases.

Application and Eligibility Requirements

The program engages in the ERAS Match program for the application process. Candidates must meet specific eligibility criteria which include:

  • Completion of at least one year in an ACGME-approved training program (e.g., transitional, internship year, or previous residency).
  • Eligibility for unrestricted licensure by the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice, necessitating successful completion of USMLE/COMLEX Steps I, II, and III within three attempts, with Step III to be passed within five years of Step II.
  • Foreign medical graduates are required to have current ECFMG certification.
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens or legally authorized to work in the United States.

Interviews and Matriculation

Upon the submission of all application materials, interviews will be coordinated which will involve discussions with faculty members, participation in residency didactics, and informal interactions with current residents. This comprehensive interview day also includes a tour of the HealthPartners Clinic.

The final decisions for residency placements are typically made in mid-December, establishing a standardized timeline for all candidates.

Visa Support

The program offers visa sponsorship for accepted candidates, typically supporting J-1 visas, which is common for foreign medical graduates pursuing graduate medical education in the United States.

Competitiveness

The Occupational Medicine Residency program is known for being selective, which reflects its strong academic standing and commitment to quality education. It is inclusive and accommodating toward both DO and IMG candidates, maintaining a competitive admissions process aimed at identifying candidates who exhibit excellence in clinical skills and dedication to occupational health.
