Kent Hospital Program

The Kent Hospital Emergency Medicine Residency Program is a four-year ACGME accredited program located in Warwick, Rhode Island. This program emphasizes comprehensive training by providing a robust clinical and didactic experience in emergency medicine for its residents.

The Kent Program offers a tightly-knit academic community, supported by its affiliation with The University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine and the Alpert Medical School of Brown University, which helps build a strong educational framework.1

Program Structure and Curriculum

The residency consists of 13 four-week blocks spread over the course of four years, which allows adequate time for residents to engage in self-directed learning and hone their specific interests within emergency medicine. Each year includes three weeks of vacation, and one conference attendance per year is also included.

Yearly Breakdown:

• PGY-1: 7 blocks of emergency medicine, 1 block each of anesthesiology/ultrasound, cardiology/CCU, EMS, ICU, internal medicine, surgery, and trauma.
• PGY-2: 7 blocks of emergency medicine, 1 block each of NICU, ICU, orthopedics, pediatric emergency medicine, toxicology, and women’s emergency medicine/L&D.
• PGY-3: 8 blocks of emergency medicine, 1 block of elective, and 2 blocks of ICU.
• PGY-4: 10 blocks of emergency medicine, 1 block of administration, and 2 blocks of electives.

This structured approach allows residents extensive exposure to emergency medicine while integrating off-service rotations in high-acuity settings. Kent Hospital’s emergency department has over 53,000 annual visits and offers a thriving high-acuity patient environment.

Clinical Training and Rotations

The core training happens at the Kent Hospital emergency department. Residents also gain experience through high-quality off-service rotations to broaden their clinical exposure.1

Notable Off-Service Rotations Include:

• Toxicology at Boston Children’s Hospital, adjacent to Harvard University.
• Trauma Surgery at Baltimore Shock Trauma.
• Pediatric Emergency Medicine and Pediatric ICU at Hasbro Children’s Hospital, associated with Brown University.
• OB/GYN and NICU at Women and Infants Hospital.
• Cardiology with attending physicians from Brigham and Women’s Cardiology Group.

Didactic Learning and Resident Development

Didactic education occurs weekly, with a designated protected time on Thursdays for lectures, case presentations, and simulations typically focusing on diverse topics within emergency medicine and pediatric emergency care. This tailored curriculum fosters a conducive learning environment whilst encouraging active participation from residents.1

Resident Support and Wellness

Wellness within residency is a priority. Kent Hospital emphasizes the importance of residents’ mental, emotional, and physical health through various initiatives like social events, financial wellness discussions, and team-building activities. Application Process and Requirements

The application process is facilitated through the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS). Candidates are encouraged to submit applications early in the season, as invitations for interviews are extended on a rolling basis. Important documentation required includes USMLE or COMLEX scores, a dean’s letter, transcripts, a personal statement, and several letters of recommendation.

There is particular emphasis on the holistic review of applicants—except for the graduated class year, there are no strict cutoffs for exam scores as the program values personal growth and potential.1
