Loyola University Medical Center Program

The Electrophysiology Cardiology Fellowship at Loyola University Medical Center is a comprehensive 24-month training program designed to equip physician fellows with the specialized knowledge and clinical skills required for a career in cardiac electrophysiology. The program is designed for cardiologists who have already completed a three-year fellowship in general cardiology and is accredited by the ACGME.

One of the distinguishing features of the program is its focus on advanced techniques in arrhythmia management, particularly in the fields of ablation techniques for ventricular arrhythmias and atrial fibrillation. The fellowship provides extensive training in device implantation and management, which is critical for the development of competencies in this specialty.

Clinical Training

The clinical training component is structured across several key rotation sites, allowing fellows to gain hands-on experience in multiple environments. Trainees will participate in:

• The electrophysiology laboratory, where fellows will learn various diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
• The device implant procedure laboratory, providing experience in managing and implanting cardiac devices.
• The outpatient arrhythmia clinic, where fellows interact with patients requiring ongoing electrophysiology care.
• The electrophysiology inpatient consult service, enriching fellows’ experiences with acute cardiac care.
• The device follow-up clinic, fostering continuity of care and management skills.

Research Opportunities

Research training is an integral part of the fellowship experience. Each fellow is expected to complete a research project, accessible via clinical facilities or research laboratories associated with Loyola. This emphasis on research not only enhances clinical training but also contributes to the medical literature in the field of electrophysiology.

Educational Programs and Conferences

The program aims to foster continuous learning through various educational events. Trainees are encouraged to attend at least one national meeting each year, such as the Heart Rhythm Society (HRS), the American College of Cardiology (ACC), or the American Heart Association (AHA). Regular conferences include:

• Weekly electrophysiology lectures.
• Intracardiac electrogram conferences.
• Journal club sessions for critical analysis of recent literature.
• Meetings related to industry technologies.
• State of the Heart (Cardiology Grand Rounds) for interdisciplinary learning.

Application Process

Applicants for the fellowship program must complete their application through the ERAS system. The required documentation includes a current curriculum vitae, three letters of recommendation (with one from the current program director), USMLE scores, and a personal statement. Following a thorough review by the program director, selected applicants will be contacted for interviews.

Visa Support

The program recognizes the importance of international candidates and can sponsor J1 visas. However, the program does not support H1B visa applications, thus limiting options for non-U.S. citizens or those without permanent residency.

Competitiveness and Requirements

This fellowship is highly competitive. Applicants should ideally possess a strong academic record, excellent USMLE scores, and relevant clinical experience. Specific application requirements may include guidelines about the year of graduation and maximum allowable failures on STEP exams, which can play a role in the selection process.
