• Mission Hospital: An 815-bed regional referral center known for its comprehensive care across all internal medicine specialties. Residents gain significant hands-on experience in various settings, including ICUs and emergency departments.
• Charles George VA Medical Center: This facility provides a full range of health services to veterans in a large catchment area, augmenting the training in a diverse patient population.
• Cherokee Indian Hospital Authority: This unique training site blends state-of-the-art healthcare with cultural humility, offering residents experience within a tribal health system.
• Additional Rural Sites: Residents gain exposure to various rural healthcare contexts, which emphasizes community health, public health initiatives, and the management of healthcare disparities.

Application Process and Requirements

MAHEC is committed to a fair and equitable selection process, following holistic review principles for applications received through ERAS. Applicants must meet certain eligibility criteria such as:

• Graduation from an accredited medical school (U.S. or Canada), or an equivalent qualification for international medical graduates.
• Passed USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 or COMLEX Level 1 and Level 2, with a maximum of three attempts.
• Holds or is eligible for a NC resident training license.

MAHEC does not sponsor H-1B visas, but will consider J-1 visa sponsorship for non-U.S. citizen applicants via the ECFMG, which is the official sponsor for J-1 physicians in U.S. residency programs.
