Mountain Area Health Education Center Program

The MAHEC Ob/Gyn Residency Program is designed to offer residents a comprehensive and enriching training experience in obstetrics and gynecology, focusing on caring for underserved populations in the Western North Carolina region. Curriculum

The curriculum integrates a variety of educational methodologies, including didactic lectures, clinical rotations, and simulation training. At least 20% of didactic time is devoted to simulation training in the state-of-the-art Simulation Center, which contributes to the immersive learning experience. This approach equips residents with the skills necessary for effective clinical practice in diverse settings.

The program emphasizes adult learning principles and regularly adapts its curriculum to incorporate innovative teaching strategies. Rotations

The residency involves extensive rotations through various subspecialty clinics, including maternal-fetal medicine, gynecologic oncology, and outpatient services. Residents are trained at a Baby-Friendly designated hospital, which not only provides extensive obstetrical care but also involves over 40,000 surgeries per year. This significant patient volume enhances the learning environment, exposing residents to a variety of clinical presentations and procedures.

Research Opportunities

Residents also receive training in medical research throughout the residency. Those pursuing an academic career have the opportunity to design and implement research projects under the guidance of faculty from the Department of Program Evaluation and Research at UNC Health Sciences at MAHEC. Completed projects frequently lead to changes in clinical practices, highlighting the program’s commitment to integrating research into everyday healthcare.

Training Sites

MAHEC residency program utilizes multiple training sites, primarily focused around Mission Hospital, which serves as the tertiary referral center for the region. Mission Hospital boasts 815 beds and provides a diverse array of services, including a dedicated Helen Powers Women’s Health Center for gynecological and obstetric care. The location is particularly notable for its resources tailored to family-centered care, including private labor and delivery rooms and on-site neonatal intensive care facilities.

The program also leverages the facilities and programs at the MAHEC Biltmore campus, which houses advanced technological resources, clinical training spaces, and a comprehensive medical library. This setting fosters an environment conducive to interprofessional collaboration, allowing residents to learn alongside peers from various health disciplines.

Visa Sponsorship and Eligibility

MAHEC does not directly sponsor residents for H1B visas. It primarily supports J-1 visa sponsorship, which requires applicants to secure a directory from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). Candidates must also satisfy specific eligibility criteria, including the completion of USMLE Steps 1 and 2 or COMLEX equivalent, with a maximum of three attempts allowed for each step.

Additionally, while being a competitive program, MAHEC encourages diversity and inclusivity in its applicant pool. The residency is friendly to both DO graduates and international medical graduates (IMGs), and actively seeks to incorporate individuals from underrepresented backgrounds in medicine.

Application Requirements

The application process mandates that candidates provide a complete application, including transcripts from a U.S. medical school, USMLE or COMLEX scores, letters of recommendation, a Dean’s letter, and evidence of community involvement and research experience. A standardized letter of evaluation is also required, which replaces one of the traditional letters of recommendation.
