Overview of the Program

The Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine/Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine program at Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences is designed to provide osteopathic physicians with advanced training following their primary residency. This year-long fellowship focuses on the comprehensive application of osteopathic manipulation and neuromusculoskeletal medicine in both outpatient and inpatient settings.

Residents are guided in practical aspects of outpatient care and hospital inpatient procedures. They’ll develop skills in diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal conditions through manipulation techniques, participating in concurrent scholarly activities such as journal clubs aimed at enhancing their understanding of neuromusculoskeletal medicine.

Didactics

Didactic sessions are personalized for each resident, with a focus on expanding knowledge within NMM and OMM. The program provides opportunities to engage in teaching first and second-year medical students, thereby reinforcing the fellowship’s commitment to education.

Training Sites and Rotations

The program encompasses several training sites characterized by their vast array of cases and patient populations. Among the primary sites are:

• OSU Medical Center: Known as the largest single-site osteopathic hospital, it offers extensive exposure to high-acuity cases and diverse patient care experiences.
• St. John Medical Center: Recognized for its excellence in various specialized fields, providing residents with insights into advanced care practices.
• St. Francis Hospital: Serving as a tertiary care center, it features facilities such as a children’s hospital and the area’s only level IV neonatal intensive care unit.

Competitiveness and Application Requirements

This fellowship program is highly competitive, welcoming both DO and international medical graduates (IMGs). Applicants need to have successfully completed a primary residency and demonstrate a foundation in osteopathic principles.

The application process necessitates submission of specific materials, including documentation verifying the completion of relevant osteopathic education, letters of recommendation from practicing D.O.s, and proof of exam scores. Any candidates that have failed the Step exams must meet a cap of two attempts. Background in OMM is strongly emphasized; hence prior training in osteopathic manipulative techniques is beneficial for applicants.
