Prisma Health/University of South Carolina SOM Columbia (Columbia) Program

The Prisma Health/University of South Carolina School of Medicine Columbia Pediatric Residency Program is a three-year, fully accredited program designed to train pediatric physicians in a dynamic and supportive environment. With a commitment to educational excellence, the program accepts 13 residents at each level, providing comprehensive training under the guidance of over 100 full-time board-certified physicians. The program emphasizes an in-depth understanding of pediatric care, fostering critical thinking and an appreciation of the disease processes that affect children. This holistic training approach prepares residents not only for general practice but also for subspecialty fellowship opportunities.

Curriculum and Rotations

The residency curriculum is meticulously developed to encompass both didactic and clinical components. Each educational block lasts four weeks, allowing residents to experience a variety of rotations across general pediatrics and subspecialties. The program prides itself on its innovative approach to education, which includes integrating modern assessment technologies into teaching practices. Residents participate in a thorough didactic series grounded in the American Board of Pediatrics’ content specifications, ensuring they are well-prepared for board certification. From their first year, residents acquire hands-on experience, progressively taking on increased responsibility and autonomy in patient care.

Training Sites

The Prisma Health system presents a diverse range of training sites, including a pediatric emergency department, a dedicated NICU, and specialized subspecialty clinics. Key facilities include a Level III NICU that manages about 800 admissions per year and a pediatric emergency department with approximately 33,000 visits annually. The Children’s Hospital features various specialty clinics, such as cardiology, endocrinology, and hematology/oncology, providing residents ample opportunities for clinical exposure and hands-on experience.

Ambulatory Experience

Ambulatory training is a cornerstone of the program, with residents gaining significant experience in outpatient care. The Children’s Hospital Outpatient Center facilitates around 16,000 visits annually, allowing residents to develop continuity of care relationships with patients. This outpatient experience is further enhanced by rotations in adolescent health, school-based health, and multidisciplinary specialty clinics.

The program encourages resident involvement in research, with opportunities to collaborate on projects alongside faculty. This is particularly evident in the strong focus on advocacy and community outreach. Competitiveness and Application Requirements

The competitiveness of the residency program is marked by a robust selection process. Applicants must have graduated from a medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). They require a complete application package via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), including medical school transcripts, three letters of recommendation, and a Dean’s letter. The application deadline is typically set for November 30 of the application year. Candidates are encouraged to possess a strong academic record without significant failures in Step exams.
