Fellowship Training Program Overview

The Infectious Disease Fellowship Program at Stony Brook is a rigorous ACGME-approved training path emphasizing both clinical and research elements for physicians aiming to specialize in infectious diseases. The program spans two to three years, during which three fellowship positions are awarded annually. As a fellow, one experiences an extensive range of complex infectious disease cases, including rare conditions unique to the Long Island region and challenges such as HIV/AIDS, burn-related infections, and healthcare-associated infections among others. Cases are referred from a tertiary care teaching hospital, Stony Brook University Hospital, and the Northport Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Curriculum Structure

• 5 months on infectious diseases consultation service
• 5 months on the immunocompromised/transplant ID service
• 4 months on consultation service at the VA
• 5 months of dedicated research time
• 4 months in an outpatient clinic
• 1 month in microbiology and orientation

Alongside clinical duties, fellows supervise and educate medical residents and students to foster an environment of learning and growth.

Research Opportunities

The fellowship promotes a strong research culture. Fellows are encouraged to engage in ongoing research collaborations within the Infectious Disease division, which covers diverse topics such as mycology, nosocomial infections, Lyme disease, and antimicrobial stewardship.
