Program Overview

The Internal Medicine Residency at Swedish Hospital is designed to shape residents into well-rounded, knowledgeable, and compassionate physicians. Situated in Chicago, one of the most diverse communities in Illinois, residents will encounter a patient population with a wide array of medical pathologies, ensuring a rich learning experience throughout the three-year training.

One of the program’s hallmarks is its commitment to autonomy and support, promoting the development of clinical judgment necessary for success in their medical careers. This program is accredited by the ACGME until 2027, ensuring adherence to high education standards.

Curriculum Structure

The residency curriculum is organized across three years, with specific rotations designed to provide a comprehensive training experience:

• PGY-1: This year includes 5 blocks on Internal Medicine Teaching Service, 2 blocks on Night Float/Clinic/PTO, and clinical rotations in Cardiology, Gastroenterology, and the Intermediate Medical Care Unit, among others.
• PGY-2: Residents continue with 4 blocks on Internal Medicine Teaching Service, alongside rotations in various specialties including Cardiology, Nephrology, Infectious Diseases, and Pulmonology.
• PGY-3: In the final year, residents focus on advanced clinical skills with rotations on the Intensive Care Unit, Palliative and Addiction medicine, Geriatrics, and elective opportunities.

Research and Scholarly Activities

Residents are encouraged to engage in scholarly activities, including leading five major conferences during their tenure, such as Tumor Board and Morbidity and Mortality meetings. Completion of a Quality Improvement (QI) project and a research project is mandatory, allowing residents to contribute to advancements in medical practice.

Resident Life

Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is a priority within the program. Residents frequently organize social events and activities outside of the hospital to foster community and support among each other. This supportive environment is designed to help residents thrive both personally and professionally.

Salary and Benefits

The program offers a competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, life insurance, and disability coverage. Residents receive stipends for meals, opportunities for continuing medical education, and have access to on-site childcare facilities. Paid Time Off (PTO) combines vacation, holiday, and sick leave, allowing for up to 20 days off per year, subject to approval.

Application and Admission Requirements

Admission to the residency program is selective. Applicants are evaluated on individually submitted applications through the ERAS system. Requirements include passing scores in USMLE (or COMLEX for DO applicants), a Dean’s letter, and three letters of recommendation. It is preferred that applicants graduate from medical school within three years of applying.

The program accepts ECFMG-sponsored J1 visas, but does not sponsor any visa types directly. Previous clinical experience in a U.S. hospital or clinic is also required.
