Overview of the Family Medicine Residency Program

The Unity Health Family Medicine Residency Program is a three-year, ACGME-accredited program designed to train the next generation of family physicians. The program emphasizes hands-on family medicine experience across various specialties and subspecialties, preparing residents for independent practice in the evolving healthcare landscape. Residents are trained to deliver high-quality and innovative care to patients of all ages, ensuring they develop the necessary skills for effective patient management across multiple settings.

Curriculum and Rotations

The curriculum comprises multiple blocks of training that cover essential areas in family medicine. Residents go through a structured rotation schedule that includes:

• Family Medicine
• Emergency Medicine
• Pediatrics
• OB/GYN
• Psychiatry
• Internal Medicine
• Subspecialty rotations in areas such as Dermatology and Sports Medicine

In addition to scheduled rotations, residents have access to six elective blocks, allowing them to pursue areas of special interest, including tracks like Emergency, Psychiatry, and General Family Medicine.

Each resident also participates in weekly didactic sessions focused on family medicine and interdisciplinary topics, enhancing their academic knowledge base and clinical skills.

Procedural Training

Residents in the Family Medicine Residency Program have substantial opportunities to perform a range of procedures, including:

• Subclavian lines
• Central lines
• Chest tubes
• IV insertions
• In-office procedures

Moreover, residents have access to a simulation lab equipped for advanced training in various emergency scenarios dealing with adult and pediatric patients, utilizing simulators like SimMan®, SimJunior, and SimBaby.

Research Opportunities

The Ray Montgomery Department of Graduate Medical Education supports various resident research projects, providing residents with opportunities to collaborate with faculty on presentations and publications in peer-reviewed journals. The program encourages scholarly activities, allowing residents to present findings at conferences and further their academic pursuits.

Application Process

The application for the Unity Health Family Medicine Residency Program is accepted exclusively through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). The program has specific criteria for preferred applicants, including:

• USMLE Step 1 score of 200 or higher and Step 2 score of 209 or higher, or COMLEX Level 1 score of 400 or greater.
• A dean’s letter or Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE).
• Three letters of recommendation.
• ECFMG certification, if applicable, by the application deadline.

Only six applicants are accepted each academic year, making this a highly competitive residency program.
