University of Colorado Program

The Department of Pathology at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus offers a vibrant residency program in Pathology (Anatomic and Clinical) designed to prepare trainees for successful careers in pathology. This program has expanded significantly over the last 15 years, beginning with 40 to now 120 faculty members. It includes a highly competitive residency training opportunity that includes 25 available positions. The residency program combines clinical training with academic excellence. Trainees have access to an extensive range of clinical and research experiences across multiple hospitals on the Anschutz Medical Campus: the University of Colorado Hospital, Children’s Hospital Colorado, and the Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center, alongside Denver Health located in downtown Denver.

Curriculum and Rotations

The curriculum encompasses both anatomic and clinical pathology, designed to ensure residents gain comprehensive knowledge and skills essential for independent practice. The residency typically lasts four years, during which residents rotate through various pathology subspecialties including surgical pathology, cytopathology, hematopathology, and molecular pathology, providing a robust foundation for diverse practice areas.

Each year’s schedule balances core rotations with elective opportunities, allowing for individualized training paths. Residents are encouraged to engage in research during elective blocks, and involvement in the laboratory’s academic curriculum is mandatory.
