The Anesthesiology Residency Program at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) in Memphis is a distinguished program dedicated to training future leaders in the field of anesthesiology. Residents primarily train at Regional One Health Medical Center, recognized as one of the busiest Level 1 trauma centers in the nation. This facility provides diverse exposure to high-acuity cases and offers a robust Acute Pain Service, allowing residents to practice a wide variety of regional nerve blocks and nerve catheters, which are critical skills in regional anesthesia.

Residents also rotate at Baptist Memorial Hospital, where they gain essential experience in complex cardiothoracic and neurosurgical procedures. The pediatric anesthesia rotations are conducted at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, which has been celebrated as one of the country’s top pediatric hospitals. Additionally, residents have a unique opportunity to rotate at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, further enriching their training experience in pediatric anesthesia.

Curriculum and Didactics

The residency curriculum is designed to ensure residents develop the core competencies needed in anesthesiology. Weekly didactic sessions cover essential topics and include a blend of lectures, simulations, workshops, and mock oral boards. Applicant Requirements

To apply for the residency, candidates must meet specific qualifications: applications must be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and include a completed application form, medical school transcript, a dean’s letter, three letters of recommendation, and a personal statement. USMLE Step 1 must be passed on the first attempt with a score of at least 240 for applicants who took it before January 1, 2022. Furthermore, candidates who graduated from medical school or a foreign anesthesia residency within the last three years are preferred2.

The program is committed to being inclusive and supports international applicants by sponsoring J-1 visas, while unfortunately, it does not sponsor H-1B visas. It is essential for candidates to be either U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or foreign nationals eligible for J-1 visas for application3.
