University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Program

The UTRGV General Surgery Residency at Valley Baptist Medical Center is a five-year program that aims to train highly skilled general surgeons knowledgeable in various surgical disciplines. Accredited since 2021, this program offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a diverse array of surgical cases.

Residents primarily train at Valley Baptist Medical Center (VBMC), recognized as the first Level II trauma center in the Rio Grande Valley, with ambitions to achieve Level I status. The program also offers external rotations at prestigious facilities such as Methodist Specialty Hospital in San Antonio and Driscoll Children’s Hospital in Corpus Christi. This exposure enables residents to develop a comprehensive skill set that encompasses trauma, critical care, surgical oncology, and other specialties.

Curriculum Overview

The curriculum is structured to provide progressive responsibility for resident training.

PGY 1 & 2: The focus during these years is on foundational general surgery competencies, with residents being involved in the preoperative and postoperative care of surgical patients. They are directly supervised by senior residents and attending surgeons, ensuring that junior residents obtain valuable experience in the operating room.

PGY 3: The third year emphasizes the development of advanced surgical judgment, with senior residents assuming more responsibilities, including supervising junior residents.

PGY 4 & 5: In the final two years, residents take on junior attending responsibilities, which include teaching and supervising junior residents and medical students. These years also allow time for elective rotations, enabling residents to focus on specific areas of interest.

Research Opportunities

Salary and Benefits

Residents benefit from a competitive salary structure, with numerous benefits that enhance their overall residency experience. Key benefits include:

• 15 days of paid vacation and 12 days of paid sick leave annually, without carryover.

Application Process

The application process requires submissions to be made via the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS). Key application components include a CV, personal statement, official medical school transcripts, and three letters of recommendation, including one from the department chair. Importantly, applicants must have passed both USMLE Step I and Step II on their first attempt, with COMLEX also accepted. Furthermore, the program expects potential residents to have graduated from medical school within three years of application submission. Prior surgical experience in the U.S. might also be beneficial and could require a letter from a current program director.

Competitiveness and Visa Support

The UTRGV General Surgery program is considered competitive, welcoming applicants from both U.S. and international backgrounds, including international medical graduates (IMGs) and DO candidates. The program provides visa support for eligible candidates, offering sponsorship for J-1 visas primarily.
