The University of Vermont Medical Center Program in Pediatrics at the Vermont Children’s Hospital is dedicated to developing highly skilled pediatricians through a robust residency program. Curriculum

The curriculum is structured across three years, each with distinct focuses:

• PGY-1 Year: This year lays the foundation with opportunities spanning the breadth of pediatrics, including newborn care and adolescent medicine. Team-based care is prioritized, fostering medical knowledge and clinical experience.
• PGY-2 Year: Residents begin assuming leadership roles, managing inpatient teams, and exploring career goals. Autonomy is increased via a more individualized curriculum.
• PGY-3 Year: The focus shifts towards professional development and career planning, with opportunities to teach and mentor junior residents while preparing for fellowship or practice.

Residents benefit from a structured call schedule that prioritizes wellness by eliminating 24-hour calls and making room for flexible scheduling. Each resident receives up to four weeks of vacation annually along with personal days.

During their three years, residents engage in a variety of clinical settings, including inpatient care, outpatient clinics, and community health initiatives. Exposure to diverse patient populations—including immigrants and refugees—is integral, supported by initiatives like the Pediatric New American Program.

Application Requirements

Applications to the program require submission via ERAS and include various materials such as CVs, personal statements, and letters of recommendation. International applicants must possess a J-1 Visa, and only specific degrees are accepted. Successful completion of USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK or COMLEX-USA exams is mandatory prior to December 31.
