UPMC Medical Education Program

UPMC Medical Education Program in Medical Biochemical Geneticsis a comprehensive one-year fellowship designed as a follow-uptraining opportunity following the Medical Genetics Residency. Thisprogram is focused on enhancing the fellow’s expertise indiagnosing and managing patients with inborn errors ofmetabolism.

Training Structure

The fellowship provides an immersive experience where fellowsspend 75% of their time involved in a high-volume inborn errors ofmetabolism practice. This exposure occurs in both inpatient andoutpatient settings, allowing fellows to master essentialdiagnostic and management skills. The remaining 25% of thefellowship is dedicated to research activities, which allowsfellows to engage in projects that may span basic science toclinical studies. This arrangement not only facilitates clinicaldevelopment but also cultivates the research acumen necessary foradvanced medical practice. At the end of the fellowship, traineeswill achieve American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) boardeligibility for certification in Medical Biochemical Genetics.
