The Neurology Residency Program at West Virginia University provides a comprehensive training experience for aspiring neurologists, uniquely equipped to tackle the challenges of contemporary neurological care. The program spans 48 months and includes a structured 12-month intern year primarily focused on Internal Medicine at Ruby Memorial Hospital followed by 36 months dedicated to Neurology training. With 8 categorical positions available, this program prides itself on delivering extensive clinical experience through various rotations across its healthcare facilities and affiliated hospitals.

Residents receive an unparalleled breadth of exposure, boasting approximately 2,500 inpatient and 22,000 outpatient evaluations yearly. This diverse training environment ensures competency in acute care, outpatient management, and comprehensive neurologic diagnoses.

Curriculum and Rotations

The curriculum is designed to cover an array of essential components, which may include inpatient rotations in:

• General Neurology Ward
• Stroke Ward
• Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU)
• Pediatric Neurology
• Neurocritical Care Unit (NCCU)

Furthermore, residents partake in elective rotations across various subspecialties such as neuroimmunology, headache medicine, neurohospitalist, movement disorders, and neuroradiology, among others. The important aspect of continuity clinics begins in the second year, allowing residents to manage patients longitudinally.

Training Sites

The program is headquartered at the J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital, a multidisciplinary, 690-bed academic center. As a Comprehensive Stroke Center and Level 1 Trauma Center, it encompasses a critical care and trauma institute where residents can gain exposure to neurocritical care as well as general trauma cases.

Salaries and Benefits

The current salary structure for the residency program starts from $57,891 for PGY-1 residents, with incremental increases across subsequent years. Benefits for residents include allowances for books and conferences, vacation time, sick leave, health and disability insurance, lab coats, and meals while on call.

Visa Support and Application Requirements

The residency program is open to qualified international medical graduates, and sponsorship is provided for J-1 visas. However, it does not sponsor H-1B visas. Applicants must submit a proof of graduation from an LCME-accredited medical school, certification from ECFMG for IMGs, and must be within five years of their graduation for consideration.
